Clannad ~After Story~ – Episode 16

1 02 2009

… well shit… there goes my mood for the week.  In the movie they never explicitly showed Nagisa’s death, they just showed that she died at one point.  So this is the first time I’ve (or anyone else who hasn’t played the game) seen Nagisa’s death.  And it was as depressing as I thought it would be.  It’s never fun to watch one of your favorite characters in anime, die.

Thankfully, KyoAni didn’t try to drag out her death in a similar manner to Misuzu in Air. It was short, yet impactful.   I really liked the direction done during that scene.  Even though there were a bunch of people around, they isolated Tomoya and Nagisa in their final moments together.  And as such, made that moment so much more meaningful and sad.

Okay well, besides the depressing end, I really enjoyed the first half of the episode as well.  It really showed just how much the characters have grown since school.  And most importantly, we get our first glimpses of the connection between the illusionary world, and Tomoya’s (the real) world.

RATING: 9.5/10

(I totally imagined the slow version of ‘ebullient future’ playing during Nagisa’s death)
