Clannad ~After Story~ – Episode 18

9 03 2009

Wow… just wow. This episode, by far, is my favorite episode of Clannad yet. Everything was done just beautifully. Even thought Tomoya was a jerk the past few episodes, this episode was more than enough for me to forgive him. I’m convinced that a major element in this show is parallels. Ushio parallels Nagisa, Tomoya parallels not only Akio, but now it’s apparent that he also parallels his father.

The flashback scene really made me appreciate Tomoya’s father quite a bit, but most importantly, it paved the way for one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen. By finally accepting the responsibility for Ushio, and prioritizing her of his past, I feel that Tomoya has finally grown into an adult, instead of a kid thinking he’s an adult. Most importantly, regarding him… he finally cried over Nagisa. All this time he avoided facing the fact that she’s gone, but thanks to his daughter, he can look at his past in a good light and move on facing the future.

And lastly… Ushio. Yes, she’s cute, but she’s also soo much more. She’s mature for her age, but not overly so. It’s what to be expected from a kid who hasn’t had the best childhood. And, as I suspected, Ushio calling Tomoya “daddy” for the first time was a MAJOR event.

RATING: 10/10 (Basically this episode was perfect)

Gyaah, just remembering the reconciliation scene is making me well up =_)
